The Greek Frappe Creation a Cold Coffee with Keep Cool Creamy Foam
.
The Greek frappe is a drink that is slathered in foam and is created from instant coffee that was spray dried and is meant to be drunk cold. Although the frappe is incredibly popular in Greece, it is also well loved in many other countries.
However, when created in other countries, the frappe is slightly different. This is because in these other countries, such as the States for example, the instant coffee is typically freeze dried and therefore contains more flavor. Although being freeze-dried does prevent the foam from forming in the same manner as a Greek frappe.
There are a few different theories as to how the first Greek frappe came to be.
Some believe that the Greek frappe can be traced all the way back to 1957 when at a trade fair, a member of the Nestle company was showing off a new product he had created especially for children. This beverage was a chocolate drink that was made on the spot by combining milk and frothing it up in a shaker.
Another story says that an employee from the Drista’s company wanted instant coffee one day but could not locate a source of hot water. Instead however, he used cold water and a shaker. This was the start of frappe coffee.
Yet one more legend states that the Greek frappe was created by workers in construction who wanted a drink that had a strong foam that could stand up against the dirt they came up against during work hours.
Frappes are a well-loved beverage in Greek beach bars because the foam on the drink helps create a barrier that allows the drink to remain cool for a long amount of time.
You can buy a frappe virtually anywhere in Greece, as it is known as the national coffee of the country. Most of the time when you order a frappe, it comes served with a glass of water as well.
The spray-dried instant coffee has practically no oil. In fact it has small bits of solid coffee and a number of molecules that supply the flavor. Not to mention of course that it has a strong kick of caffeine.
The layer of froth on top of a frappe is somewhat like the foam on top of espresso. However, the frappe foam is much denser.
The foam on top of a Greek frappe actually does not alter the flavor of the coffee at all. In fact, when drinking a Greek frappe, one typically will use a straw so that you do not actually have to have the foam touch your lips.
Although that is the case, the foam on top of a frappe is one of the most important parts and most people would not consider consuming a Greek frappe without the creamy layer of foam. A large number of people enjoy both the flavor as well as the texture of frappe foam. Those very familiar with drinking frappes will often insist that the foam content is perfect before consuming the beverage.
A Greek frappe is available in three different levels of sweetness. These levels of sweetness are made by using different amounts of sugar in the frappe. A sweet frappe has two or even more teaspoons of sugar in the blend. A medium frappe uses about 0.5- 1.5 teaspoons of sugar. The last and least sweet frappe uses no sugar at all.
No matter which type of Greek frappe you choose, they can be made with or without milk, Kahlua and or a number of other delicious liqueurs.
Although not actually a ‘real’ frappe, some people enjoy using chocolate milk in their frappe drink. Some varieties of frappe can be stirred with a spoon, which does make for a little difference in texture and even somewhat of a different flavor
